Shapeways Shop Checklist: How to Order Custom Parts Without Wasting Money

I've handled custom manufacturing orders for eight years. I've personally made—and documented—14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $22,000 in wasted budget. This checklist is the one I wish I'd had before my first order through a Shapeways shop.

Before you upload anything to Shapeways (or any 3D printing service), check:

  • Wall thickness is above the process minimum.
  • Units are correct—millimeters, not inches. I've made this mistake more than once.
  • The mesh is manifold (closed, no holes).
  • Minimum feature size is within what the selected material can handle.

Shapeways has automated checks for some of these. But automated checks won't catch every design problem. A 30-second manual review of your own file can prevent an embarrassing redo.

Step 2: Pick the Process by Part Requirements, Not Habit

The platform is multi-process for a reason. 3D printing wins for complex internal channels and one-off parts. CNC machining wins for tight tolerances and production quantities. Injection molding makes sense once your volume is high enough to pay for tooling. Sheet metal is for brackets, enclosures, and anything thin and structural.

A common question I hear is “CNC machine vs milling machine—what’s the difference?” Honestly, the comparison is usually between a CNC mill and a manual milling machine. A CNC mill is basically a milling machine; it just runs under program control instead of hand cranks. For repeatability, CNC wins. For a one-off repair, a manual mill might be faster.

One detail people forget: every CNC mill uses a rotating cutter—called a mill end cutter or end mill—and that cutter has a radius. That means sharp inside corners are physically hard to machine. If your design calls for square internal corners, a 3D printing service can handle it better than CNC.

Step 3: Read the Instant Quote Like a Contract

Instant quotes are great. I love seeing a number in seconds. But the unit price is not the total price. You still need to check setup fees, finish options, shipping, and lead time.

Here’s a pattern I’ve seen in my own purchasing history: one supplier quotes $0.80 per part. Another quotes $1.10. The lower quote looks like an obvious no-brainer. But then the first supplier adds a $60 setup fee, a longer lead time, and no surface finish. Suddenly the “cheaper” option costs 40% more. When I compared two quotes side by side—same part, different finish requirements—I finally understood why the details matter more than the sticker price.

I’ve said it for years: the lowest quote isn’t the cheapest part. Hidden costs are still costs. In 2021, I saved $120 upfront on a 200-part order by skipping a finish option. Ended up spending $450 on manual post-processing. That’s the definition of penny-wise, pound-foolish.

Shipping is often the sneakiest line item. But a 12-inch part needs a box, dimensional weight changes everything, and “free shipping” may be baked into the part price. Ask.

Step 4: Compare Against Your Own Printer Before Ordering a Service

Sometimes you don’t need a professional service. If your part fits in your desktop printer and the material works, printing it in-house might be faster and cheaper. But “faster and cheaper” only works when the print succeeds.

Know your machine’s limits. If you’re comparing, check the Creality Ender 3 V3 SE 3D printer specifications first: build volume 220 x 220 x 220 mm, max nozzle temperature 260°C, and a layer height range around 0.1–0.4 mm. That’s enough for a lot of prototypes. But if your part needs larger dimensions, a resin-grade surface, or a specialty material, the desktop printer isn’t the right tool.

Step 5: Use the Design-for-Manufacturing Review (Even If You Think It’s Extra)

Shapeways positions itself as a design-for-additive-manufacturing support partner. That’s not marketing fluff—use it.

The numbers once said skip the review. My gut said ask anyway. Turns out the review caught a large unsupported ledge that would have failed on the build plate. The “extra” consultation cost a little money. The redo would have cost a lot more.

Another mistake I learned from: in 2022, I told the account manager “standard finish.” They heard “as-molded finish.” We were using the same words but meaning completely different things. Result: 250 parts with visible layer lines and a $350 cleanup bill. Now I ask for a surface roughness value and a physical sample before production.

Step 6: Save the Reorder Recipe, Not Just the STL

If you run a Shapeways shop, you’re probably selling more than once. Don’t treat each order as a one-off. Save the material, process, orientation, finish, and post-processing notes alongside the file. That “reorder recipe” has caught 47 potential errors for my team in the past 18 months.

And if you’re selling through your shop, be careful with claims. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), ads and product descriptions have to be truthful and substantiated. Don’t write “unbreakable” unless you have test results to back it up.

Common Mistakes I Still See on Orders

  • Ignoring tolerance for mating parts. A CNC machine can typically hold tight tolerances; a 3D printer has a wider range. Ask what the process can actually hold.
  • Comparing only unit price. The total cost is setup + part + finish + shipping + risk of bad parts. Ignoring any of those is how you end up with a “cheap” order that costs more than an expensive one.
  • Forgetting that a mill end cutter leaves a fillet on internal corners. If your design needs a sharp corner, change the geometry or choose another process.
  • Skipping lead time until the last minute. Then you pay rush fees. Then you still miss the deadline.

Bottom line: every significant mistake I’ve documented came from skipping one of these six steps. The checklist won’t make you perfect, but it’ll keep your budget from becoming another case study in “I should’ve known better.”
